This email has 2 purposes:  - to update you on the SKC incinerator JR (by telling you there's no significant update)  - to let you know about a Public Forum on Tuesday next week (7 May) at the HK Convention & Exhibition Centre from 5-7pm at which you the public are invited to 'participate, actively deliberate, understand the current status of thermal technologies [for waste management] and appraise yourself on the applicability of these technologies to Hong Kong'.  Well, that's what the blurb says.

MORE ON THE PUBLIC FORUM

Admission is free of charge, on a first come first serve basis.  It takes place in Room S421 at the HK Convention & Exhibition Centre in Harbour Road, Wanchai. From 5-7pm, Tuesday 7 May 2013.

FSK's FULL Article to Sai Kung Magazine Jan 2013 regarding Hiram's Highway

Hiram’s Highway Improvements – for Sai Kung Magazine

Friends of Sai Kung are not against improving safety standards and traffic flow on Hiram's Highway. We feel there is room for improvement but are strongly against the construction of a dual carriageway, or even a continuous three lane highway.

FSK collected more than 1,800 petition signatures protesting such construction which would lead to the ‘over-development’ of Sai Kung. Nearly half of the petitioners were non-resident visitors and most were Hong Kongers as opposed to Expatriate residents.

FSK are against a multi-lane highway for the following reasons:

Over-Development - FSK is concerned that more visitors/vehicles will create an imbalance of development versus the natural environment. With a multi-lane highway, the characteristics of this small town will disappear to be replaced by more and more modern buildings and chain shops and villages choked with uncoordinated small house development.

Hiram’s Highway: Stage 1 Improvements
Submission to Director of Highways

Introduction:
The Friends of Sai Kung (FSK) is a Registered Society whose Objects are as follows:
“The Society is a not-for-profit community organisation which seeks to preserve and improve the quality of life of Sai Kung people and to protect the unique environment of Sai Kung for the benefit of Hong Kong and its visitors.”
In accordance with these Objects, we are hereby making this submission to you because we feel that what the Planning Department calls “The Leisure Garden of Hong” is seriously threatened by radical proposals to widen Hiram’s Highway (HH) into a dual or multiple lane carriageway.

A Request for a Meeting on making compliance with the Convention on Biological Diversity a priority for Hong Kong

19 December 2012

Hon. Chief Executive Leung Chun-Ying Office of the Chief Executive 1 Tim Ma Avenue Hong Kong

Dear Mr. Leung,

Request for a Meeting on making compliance with the Convention on Biological Diversity a priority for Hong Kong

The undersigned request a meeting with you, to explain why the implementation of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) should be a top priority for your Administration and should be included in the 2012-13 Policy Address, in order to make progress on a key tenet of your promise regarding nature conservation in your election manifesto.

The CBD was extended to Hong Kong in May 2011. To follow the CBD's updated Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020 Hong Kong is expected to produce a comprehensive Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (BSAP) and start implementation in 2015.

Support Required for the Incorporation of Tai Long Sai Wan in Sai Kung East Country Park

From our Friends at the Conservancy Association (CA)

Dear all,

You may be aware that AFCD is trying to incorporate Tai Long Sai Wan into Sai Kung East Country Park. The Conservancy Association (CA) is quite worrying as Sai Kung Rural Committee and Heung Yee Kuk keeps on mobilizing objection comments through protests and other channels, though not much medias report these.

The 60-day objection deadline is approaching (24/12) and more supporting letters are necessary, even though the gazette period, strictly speaking, would only tackle objection comments.
